She Found Me on Claude. Not Google. Claude.

A couple of weeks ago, a woman reached out about a project she needed done and after that some backend administrative type of things. Normal enough. I did what I always do before a discovery call (if I don't already know them)... I looked her up on social media. Turns out we have a lot of mutual friends, but we'd never met.

So, naturally, I asked her the question every small business owner asks a new lead, "How did you hear about me?"

Her reply (which I was NOT prepared for) was "Claude and Google." Needless to say, I was quite surprised.

Not a referral. Not a Facebook group. Not a chamber event. She asked an AI chatbot who could help her and my name came back.

I sat with that for a minute, because it's exactly the kind of thing that sounds like a fluke! Until you look at the numbers and realize it's not a fluke at all. It's the new front door.

This isn't a fluke. It's a trend with receipts.

Here's what's actually happening in 2026 and why "getting found" doesn't mean what it used to:

  • 37% of consumers now start their searches with AI tools instead of Google, according to a 2026 AI and Search Behavior study. Not "sometimes use AI". They start there, first, before anything else.

  • 44% of US adults have used ChatGPT, more than double the share from just two years ago. Google's Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude aren't far behind. Claude alone grew it's web traffic by roughly 855% year over year.

  • Nearly 3 in 4 Americans say they search with AI on a weekly basis, with recommendations, quick facts, and vendor research topping the list of what they're asking for.

  • Among people who do still cross-check AI's answer with a traditional search, 85% are doing it to verify and compare. Meaning the AI conversation is often the actual decision part, and Google is just the receipt.

Translation: the woman who found me didn't stumble onto my business by accident. She's part of a fast-growing group of people who now treat AI chat the same way we used to treat asking a friend, "hey, do you know anyone who does this?". Except the friend has read the entire internet.

Am I Using AI in My Business? Obviously.

I'd be a hypocrite to write this post and not admit it. Yes, AI is woven into how Northstar Admin Collective runs. I use it to draft communications, tighten up workflows, build out systems in the tools I already work with daily, and yes, it helps me write things like this blog post. Not all of it, but give me the right pointers. Not to place judgment and hands-on partnership clients hire me for, but to do the repetitive, time-sucking stuff faster so I can spend more of my energy on the actual relationship.

If I expect potential clients to trust an AI's answer when they ask "who can help me get my create an automation in my CRM," I'd better be using the same tools to run a tighter operation myself. Otherwise, what are we doing here?

Ok, But HOW Does an AI Even Know I Exist?

This is the part most business owners skip past, and it's the part that actually matters. AI tools aren't magic. They're pulling from real, specific sources, and if those sources are thin or outdated, you're invisible no matter how good your work is. Here's roughly how it works:

  1. Your Google Business Profile is doing more work than you think. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode pull heavily from your GBP. Your categories, business description, services list, hours, and attributes. A complete, active, accurate profile is one of the fastest ways to show up, often within a few weeks of updates.

  2. Reviews aren't just social proof, they are data that the AI reads. AI systems summarize sentiment from your reviews to describe your business to someone who has never heard of you. Recent reviews matter more than a big stale total. If your last review is from 2023, that's a signal, too, just not the one you want.

  3. Your website content gets crawled and cited. Tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on indexed web content. For example, actual blog posts and actual service descriptions. This is exactly why the blog post you're reading right now isn't just "content". It is a citation waiting to happen.

  4. Consistency across the interwebs builds trust. Your business name, address, and phone number (aka NAP) need to match everywhere. Your website, directories, social profiles, literally... EVERYWHERE. Inconsistency reads as unreliable to humans and AI alike.

  5. Structured, specific answers beat vague marketing copy. AI tools are matching real questions to real answers. Like "Who can help with vacation coverage for my small business in Northern Colorado?" Generic "we do it all" pages don't cite well. Clear, specific service pages do.

The businesses showing up in these AI conversations aren't the flashiest, they're the most findable. Complete profile, active reviews, real content, consistent info. That's it. That's the whole game.

What this means for you

If you're a small business owner reading this and thinking "I don't even have time to think about SEO, let alone whatever this AI thing is now." That's exactly the point. This is one more thing quietly falling through the cracks while you're busy running the business.

The good news is that none of this is complicated. It just needs someone paying attention to it consistently. Updating your profile, requesting the reviews, keeping the website current instead of a panicked overhaul every couple of years.

That's the kind of thing that gets handled proactively, quietly, and efficiently around here.
